Employee data: Who, what, why, where, and when?

As organisations become more aware of data regulations and improve their practices around managing customer and client data, it can be easy for them to forget to ensure that employee data is also handled correctly.

In this webinar, our panel considered some of the key challenges, pitfalls and best practices involved in the collection, processing and storing of employee data from job application to exit – and discussed why it is so important to get this right.

Sara Newman, Securys co-founder and Practice Lead was joined by Joanna Kennedy, Global Group Data Protection Officer at SAE International.

The panel discussed their experiences of working for some of the world’s largest firms, providing practical advice on current HR and compliance team challenges as well as sharing relevant success stories from recent initiatives.

Key takeaways

  1. Be transparent with your employees to build trust. Be honest about what is collected and why and consider allowing employees access to their own data.
  2. If you are not prepared to say it to someone's face, do not write it down.
  3. Give robust and constructive feedback to unsuccessful candidates. This may mean they don't feel the need to put in a data subject access request.
  4. Limit your data collection to only what your business really needs before a candidate starts for their smooth onboarding.
  5. When it comes to privacy training, it is not enough simply to conduct it. It is essential to validate the effectiveness of your privacy training.
